“Second Son” is a great-looking game that shows off the PS4’s future potential.

The hot selling PS4 has gone through a little exclusive software drought as of late, but that ended recently with the release of “Infamous: Second Son.” PS4 owners looking for an exciting game to play should definitely pick this one up.

In this third main entry of the Infamous series, players take control of a new protagonist, Delsin Rowe, an Akomish Native American who has the ability to possess superhuman powers. In a brief tutorial-like sequence, the mischievous Delsin and his brother Reggie happen upon a crashed military truck where some Conduits escape. Delsin unknowingly absorbs smoke-based powers from one of them, and during his chase after him gets caught by Brooke Augustine, director of the Department of Unified Protection, who tortures his tribe with her concrete powers. He decides the right thing to do is travel to Seattle to steal her power and save the tribe.

Delsin is arrogant, sarcastic and doesn’t have a care in the world. His snarky comments as you play through the story will annoy some, but the voice acting for him along with the rest of the cast is good. The plot isn’t the most original when it comes to a world inhabited by superhumans and regular people, but it’s entertaining enough to the very end.

Morality plays a major role in “Second Son,” giving players the opportunity to be a good or evil character. During some cutscenes you can choose either option, which changes how characters think about Delsin. A karma meter fills either way depending on how many “bad” things are done, like killing enemies, or “good” things, like non-lethal takedowns. It’s best to play through the game being one or the other to stay consistent with the story, and once again the opposite way to get the complete experience.

Initially, Delsin only has smoke powers, but more are absorbed as the story progresses like flashy neon moves that make you run faster. A very expansive skill tree lets players choose what moves to upgrade and unlock to their liking. It’s nice to see plenty available, and the game’s mission variety means it’s important to not just focus in one area. Karma plays a role, too, as certain skills are only available depending on how high a good or evil level you are.

Using these moves in combat is exciting, and the controls are very responsive as you launch projectiles, dodge enemy fire and deliver punishing melee strikes at a frantic pace. Enemy AI is acceptable as they’ll run for cover and toss explosives at you to get you out of hiding. Escaping up vents with the smoke power to get to higher ground never gets old.

“Second Son” is also one of the best looking games on the PS4, and it really shows off the console’s future potential. Sucker Punch did an excellent job creating a vibrant world that’s alive with people. While a rare clipping glitch might occur, the frame rate keeps up nicely during the hectic battle sequences.

The overworld is filled with side missions like spraying graffiti on walls, stopping drug busts and destroying security cameras, although they become repetitive over time. A day-one patch also included the Paper Trail storyline, a fun online and in-game adventure co-developed by Sucker Punch and 42 Entertainment that adds several more hours of gameplay. It also tweaks boss fights, which are satisfying, as well as difficulty balance and graphics, all resulting in a package that’s worth the price of admission.

3 1/2 stars out of 4

I honestly wish it wasn't an exclusive, so I can play it on PC. But hey, it looks great. Infamous did good with this, not saying the last ones weren't the lessers.
